Secretary-General António Guterres warned that education is in crisis across the globe, mentioning that the disaster in classrooms was slow burning and often unseen but with philosophical consequences for individuals, societies, and our collective future.
Due to the disturbance caused by the covid19 pandemic, hundreds of millions of children and young people are still not visiting the school. Those in school are not learning the basic skills needed as citizens and participants in society. Many more are doubting the relevancy of their education systems and curricula for today's world.
Theirworld conducted a global survey which shows that more than two-thirds of youth polled feel betrayed by the leaders as they are not fulfilling their promise of providing quality education. The #LetMeLearn campaign aims at building momentum toward the Transforming Education Summit. The Secretary-General will assemble on 19 September to expose a new concept for education that equips students of all ages and backgrounds with the knowledge, value, and skills they need to prosper. World leaders will decide the appropriate actions to be taken in order to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4- Quality education.
The UN chief stated that the #LetMeLearn campaign was to make sure world leaders attending the summit pay attention to the voices and opinions of learners. The diverse experiences and views of young people and lifelong students everywhere will feed into the discussions, decisions, and consequences of the summit through this campaign. The UN Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, defines the historic summit as a global education COP26 moment, the last chance for action to aver an education catastrophe for a generation of young people directly influenced by the pandemic, conflicts, the climate crisis, and many more challenges.
Theirworld: Crisis of quality and relevance
Justin van Fleet, the President of Theirworld, stated that the conclusions that will be made by global leaders next month at the Transforming Education Summit would affect the lives of hundreds of millions of children across the world and reverberate through every community on the planet. He added that Global education is facing a crisis of equity, quality, and relevance. Currently, education is a privilege, not a right, and refused to children due to aspects above their control at birth. It is time for world leaders to listen to young people and take action immediately. Time is running out, and inaction is not an option in this situation.
