The University Grants Commission has recently introduced the syllabus of Cybersecurity programmes at the Under Graduate and Post Graduate levels. Through this syllabus, the UGC aims at developing the comprehensive knowledge of cyber security issues, even for students studied from non-technical background.



UGC Chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar launched the new syllabus on the occasion of Cyber Jagrukta Divas. During the occasion, Kumar talked about the importance of Cyber security as a subject and it's requirement to be incorporated at UG and PG level in all streams. The course syllabus has been designed with an aim to create responsive, aware, and responsible digital citizens, "thereby contributing effectively to an overall healthy cyber security posture and ecosystem", he added.



He further added that the Higher Education Institutions can also invite Cyber Security/ IT/ Computer qualified experts/ faculty to conduct the tutorials, lectures, and practical for classroom activities of these programmes.



As per the issued syllabus, the students from UG level will be expected to cover concepts of basic and mid-level whereas PG students will study mid to advanced-level concepts. The level-wise topics are mentioned below:





  • For UG level: Introduction to Cyber security, Social Media Overview, Cybercrime and Laws, e-Commerce, digital device security, and digital payments, among others.




  • For PG level: Cyber Laws, Cyber Crimes, Cyber Security Management, Data Privacy and Security, and Compliance and Governance, among others.





The syllabus document states, "After finishing this module, students will have an understanding of the legal framework that exists in India for cybercrime, including aspects related to personal data privacy and security. They will also get insight into the Data Protection Bill, 2019, and data privacy and security issues related to social media platforms".



The Commission will introduce these courses at colleges and universities and colleges under optional or elective categories.
