The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released the Guidelines to promote physical fitness, sports, students' health, welfare, and psychological and emotional well-being at higher educational institutions in India. UGC has asked the educational institutions to execute the guidelines in letter and spirit.

The commission guidelines read the commission constituted an Expert Committee to thoroughly review all problems relating to students' mental health and physical, psychological, and emotional well-being on the campuses of higher education institutions and frame suitable guidelines. The Committee has recommended the following Guidelines, which are to be implemented by all higher educational institutions under the purview of the University Grants Commission.

The UGC said it has already given guidelines for the physical safety of students, like strengthening the campuses, hostel buildings, grounds, canteens, library, and other student activity spaces.

UGC guidelines

  • A vibrant campus life for learners; may come via prospects linked to academic and co-curricular activities, excluding having relations with society and ecology via field training, summer internships, educational tours, and job placement activities.

  • Every educational institution must have a Students Services Centre (SSC) accountable for dealing with and addressing the issues associated with stress and emotional adjustment.

  • HEIs must concentrate on physical activity for all students in order to help them remain physically fit and mentally healthy.

  • Physical training programmes and provisions

  • Opportunity for students to reform: the educational institutes must avoid such punitive actions to the extent possible and take affirmative moves through programmes, including hiring professional psychological counselors and encouraging wellness through yoga and meditation.

  • Structured reform & self-development programmes may be started by educational institutions, which can function as catalysts for inducing teaching values, behavioral change, and fostering human strengths.

  • HEIs should plan for agreements with institutions like AIIMS, RINPAS, NIMHANS, HBAS, and other institutions where departments of psychiatry are fully operational.

  • Colleges and universities should begin particular courses/programmes to prepare mental health professionals to be accountable for educating and training professionals.
