Every year on 24 April the National Local Self Government Day, also known as the National Panchayati Raj Day, is celebrated in India by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. The first day was celebrated on 24 April 2010 by the then Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh. It was his belief that for the development process, PRIs (Panchayati Raj Institutions) must function properly and locally.

This day is celebrated by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj because the 73rd Amendment of the Constitution under the Constitution Act 1992 came into force on this day. On this day, the awards are given by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to the best performing Panchayats/ States/ Union Territories and the awards are:

  • DDUPSP (Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar)

  • CFGPA (Child-Friendly Gram Panchayat Award)

  • NDRGGSP (Nanaji Deshmukh Rashtriya Gaurav Gram Sabha Puraskar)

  • GPDP (Gram Panchayat Development Plan)

Another award that is given to States/ Union Territories only is ePanchayat Puraskar.
