What exactly is National Safe Motherhood Day?



National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD for short) is celebrated in India as a day to raise awareness of maternity and other health services available to pregnant and nursing mothers. Observed. In 2013, the government declared April 11th as National Motherhood Protection Day, an annual event in Kasturba to mark Gandhi's birthday.

When did the NSMD initiative start?



Bringing together various organizations and individuals, WRAI campaigned for safe motherhood in India. A new theme is chosen each year and there is a national outpouring of support to celebrate the occasion. The theme for 2019 is “Midwives for Mothers”.



India accounts for 15% of global maternal deaths, with more than 44,000 women dying each year, according to WRAI. Nearly 80% of women give birth in hospitals or other medical facilities. Additionally, the organization believes that maternal mortality can be avoided with proper care and facilities.



How can maternal safety be improved?



From the above information, it is clear that the safety of mothers and future mothers in India needs attention. Organizations like WRAI are actively working to provide life-saving treatment for women, especially in rural India. Anemia is a common problem among women in India and they are working to raise awareness about it. It has worked on behalf of the NSMD through various programs and initiatives such as the Matritoba Sahyog Yogna (IGMSY) (Maternity Benefit Scheme).

NSMD also combats the prevention of child marriage, which remains common in many remote areas of India and is indirectly linked to rising maternal mortality.



According to the World Health Organization (WHO), maternal mortality is higher in poor and rural areas where people are unaware of safe maternal health practices and medical facilities. According to WHO, the global maternal mortality rate fell by more than 44% between her 1990 and 2015, and India is working towards the goal of lowering this rate even further in the future.
