World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is observed annually on May 17. World Telecommunication and Information Society Day helps to raise awareness of the opportunities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) can bring to communities and economies, as well as methods to bridge the digital gap.



May 17 celebrates the day of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the composition of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The THEME for 2023 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day



This year 2023, the theme for World Telecommunication and Information Society Day concentrates on “Empowering the least developed countries through information and communication technologies.”



World Telecommunication and Information Society Day History



World Telecommunication Day has been observed every year on May 17 since the year 1969, celebrating the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. The Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973 as Resolution 46 instituted it.



World In the month of November in the year 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society reached out to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in order to announce May 17 as World Information Society Day to concentrate on the significance of ICT and the wide range of problems connected to the Information Society presented by WSIS. The General Assembly embraced a resolution (A/RES/60/252) in the month of March 2006, defining that World Information Society Day shall be honored every year on May 17.



In November 2006, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, determined to observe both events on May 17 as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
