Earth day History

US Senator Gaylord Nelson organised the first Earth Day. He was inspired by the anti-war protests of the 1960s in order to make a similar movement focused on environmental issues. He selected April 22 as the date for the occasion because it fell between spring break and final examinations, making it more manageable for college students to participate in the activities.

The first Earth Day was an enormous hit, with an estimated 20 million Americans participating in awareness rallies, protests, and other occurrences across the nation. It helped increase awareness about environmental problems, including air and water pollution, wildlife extinction, and deforestation.

Significance of Earth Day

Every year, Earth Day acts as a reminder for all individuals that we all have a part to play in saving the planet. It facilitates us to think about the impact our day-to-day choices and activities have on the environment and to take measures to decrease our carbon footprint, save natural habitats, protect wildlife, and conserve resources.

Earth Day also functions as an opportunity to advocate for policy differences that can have an optimistic impact on the environment, such as stronger rules and laws to decline pollution, advanced support for renewable energy, and more sustainable land-use techniques.
