World Consumer Rights Day is observed on March 15 every year to increase global awareness about consumer rights and encourage consumer protection. The day aims to conscious people of market injustices across the globe. It is an annual day that glorifies solidarity within the international consumer movement.

World Consumers Rights Day History



World Consumers Rights Day day was observed on March 15, 1983, for the first time, inspired by United States President John Fitzgerald Kennedy's US Congress address on March 15, 1962. He addressed the issue of consumer rights and emphasized its importance, and became the first world leader to speak about consumer rights. Every year on this day, several organisations like Consumer International observe the occasion by carrying out events and campaigns to protect consumer rights.



World Consumer Rights Day seeks to ensure that consumers are not subjected to market exploitation or unjustness that may risk their rights. Consumers are conscious of their rights and how they should be used in their daily lives.



World Consumer Rights Day 2023 Theme



This year the theme of World Consumer Rights Day 2023 is "Empowering Consumers Through Clean Energy Transitions." It aims to expand awareness of consumer empowerment and their position to push for a more rapid clean energy transition.



Consumer International, the organisation for consumer groups around the globe, said amidst the most significant cost-of-living concern in a generation and as the energy world drastically reacts to supply and climate problems, we have a core part to play in delivering a just change for consumers.



Consumer rights in India



On December 9, 1986, the consumer protection act was passed in the Indian Parliament in order to empower consumers. The consumer protection act focuses on establishing consumer councils, forums, and appellate courts for setting consumer grievances.
