World Water Day is observed on March 22 every year in order to spread awareness about the water crisis all over the planet. World Water Day 2023 seeks to fulfill the vision of sustainable water and sanitation for all by the year 2030.



The United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR) is an overview of the water crisis. The report is published on World Water Day every year, presenting policies and suggestions to decision-makers to offer the best techniques and in-depth studies of the global water crisis.



World Water Day Significance



Water is necessary for existence, but many people do not have any access to it. World Water Day reminds the world to work in this direction to help conservation measures. According to the United Nations report, one in four people does not have any access to clean drinking water.



Insufficient access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene induces death to about 1.4 million people yearly, and 74 million people cut their life quickly.



About 44 percent of household wastewater globally is not treated correctly. On the other hand, global water need is expected to rise by 55 percent by 2050.



World Water Day History



The UN General Assembly considered World Water Day on December 22, 1992. The resolution was adopted, and March 22 was declared to be observed as World Water Day. The first World Water Day was celebrated on March 22, 1993.



World Water Day Theme 2023



The World Water Day theme 2023 is Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. The theme 2023 highlights the need for strict action to protect the planet from the water crisis. Addressing the problem, the UN said billions of individuals and countless schools, businesses, hospitals, farms, and factories do not have the clean water and toilets they need. There is an urgent requirement to accelerate change – to go beyond business as usual.



In 2015, the world was dedicated to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 as an element of the 2030 agenda. A commitment to providing safely managed water and sanitation by 2030.



The United Nations will conduct the UN 2023 Water Conference, the first event in the last 50 years, on March 22-24 in New York.
