Theme 2022: Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development
On 2 December 2021, the United Nations General Assembly announced that the applications of standard sciences are critical for improvement in various fields such as agriculture, medicine, water resources, industry, environment, energy planning, communication, and culture. World Science Day for Peace and Development is contributing to the Year 2022 by celebrating this theme.
In December 2021, the United Nations General Assembly said we need more basic science to accomplish the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Indeed, the share of domestic research expenditure devoted to basic sciences differs widely from one nation to another. According to data from the UNESCO Science Report 2021 for 86 countries, some commit less than 10 percent of their research expense to basic sciences and others more than 30 percent.
