The fifth International Day of Education will be observed on 24 January 2023 under the theme- To Invest in People, Prioritize education.

On 24 January, the world celebrates the International Day of Education. UNESCO started observance on this International Day of Education to raise awareness regarding the importance, the role of education for peace and development.



It is believed that accomplishing gender equality, and smashing the cycle of poverty, is achievable with inclusive, equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all.



International Day of Education History



Around 258 million children and youth are still not registered in school, and 617 million children and teenagers are incapable of reading or performing simple math operations, according to UNESCO. Additionally, less than 40 percent of girls in Sub-Saharan Africa finish lower secondary education, and 4 million young refugees and children are not registered in school. They are being prohibited from their right to an education.



In order to acknowledge the significance of education for world peace and development, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution in 2018, representing 24 January as the International Day of Education.



At that time, 59 member states wrote the resolution to celebrate the International Day of Education. It also demonstrates the process of reinforcing transformative measures for quality, inclusive education for all, and equality.

The fifth International Day of Education will be observed on 24 January 2023 under the theme- To Invest in People, Prioritize education.



Building on the global momentum developed by the United Nations Transforming Education Summit in September 2022, this year’s International Day of Education will call for holding strong political mobilization around education and charting the path to translate commitments and global initiatives into motion.



Education must be a priority as it accelerates progress toward all the Sustainable Development Goals against the backdrop of a global recession, rising inequalities, and the climate problem.



UNESCO is dedicating this year's International Day of Education to Afghan girls and women denied their education rights. It calls for the immediate lifting of the prohibition restricting their access to education.
