Delhi University has recently initiated a revision in its annual fee structure, marking a notable 46% increase across diverse categories, reaching an amount of Rs.2,350. This revision has sparked varied sentiments among the student body and faculty members, who allege that these hikes might be aimed at diverting student funds to repay the interest on loans obtained from the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA). Notably, HEFA had sanctioned a substantial loan of Rs.930 crore in October.

Additionally, fees for student welfare funds have doubled to Rs.200, while the development fund charges have climbed by over 10%, now standing at Rs.1,000 compared to the revised Rs.900 announced in June last year.

In an effort to extend support to economically disadvantaged segments, the university has revised the annual fees for its support fund to Rs.150 for the upcoming academic year. This constitutes the second fee hike within merely a year, following the previous increase in annual charges announced in July last year, which was reportedly the first hike in 13 years. This earlier increment witnessed the annual charges for the university development fund jump from Rs.600 to Rs.900 in 2022.

The revisions have generated considerable discourse among Delhi University's academic community, with some expressing concerns regarding the potential impact of these fee adjustments on student accessibility and financial burdens.

With the Academic Council scheduled to convene on December 6, discussions are anticipated to revolve around the comprehensive ramifications of these fee revisions and their implications for students and the university's academic landscape.
