India's scientific prowess received a significant boost as the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) successfully launched and tested the country's first Hypervelocity Expansion Tunnel Test Facility, S2. This monumental achievement places India among a select few nations with advanced hypersonic testing capabilities, paving the way for advancements in aerospace technology.
Titled- 'Jigarthanda', the S2 facility stands as a testament to India's commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific exploration. Located within IIT Kanpur's Hypersonic Experimental Aerodynamics Laboratory (HEAL), the 24-meter-long facility is poised to revolutionize hypersonic research by simulating flight speeds ranging between 3-10 km/s. This capability is integral for replicating hypersonic conditions encountered during various missions, including atmospheric entry of vehicles, asteroid entry, scramjet flights, and ballistic missiles.
The development of S2 owes its success to collaborative efforts fueled by a deep understanding of physics and precision engineering. Spearheaded by Professor Mohammed Ibrahim Sugarno and his dedicated team, the project overcame significant challenges, including perfecting the 'free piston driver' system. This system, requiring precise control and execution, involves firing a piston at high pressure down a compression tube at staggering speeds and bringing it to a complete stop—a feat achieved through expertise and innovation.
