Considered one of the largest 1-day volunteer event, every year the International Coastal Clean-Up Day is organised around the world on the third Saturday of September month. This year, the event is being celebrated on 19 September 2020.
The movement was initiated by Linda Maraniss and Kathy O'Hara while they both were working for Ocean Conservancy on an individual level in 1986. They both outreached to other beach-lovers and arranged a cleanup. They also asked volunteers to surpass trash picking and record each item that is being collected so that data could be managed and measures could be identified to eliminate trash in the future.
The Cleanup event has expanded tremendously since 30 years around the world.
On this occasion, a virtual event was held by the Union Environment Ministry to announce the decision to advocate 08 beaches of India for the International eco-label 'Blue Flag'. India's initiative has also been commended by the World Bank. Prakash Javdekar, Union Environment Minister, assured that the Indian government is fully committed to clean the beaches across the nation.
Blue Flag label is given to the clean beaches of the world. In the event, the Ministry also launched BEAMS (Beach Environment & Aesthetics Management Services), India's own eco-label.
