Every year on January 26, the International Customs Day is observed by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs to honour the custom agencies and officials for their duty in maintaining the goods' movement across the borders.



The theme for 2021 year, given by the WCO (World Customs Organisation), is 'Customs bolstering Recovery, Renewal, and Resilience for a sustainable supply chain'.



The main programme was organised through virtual mode at the Ministry of Finance and was attended by M Ajit Kumar, CBIC Chairman; board members, senior officers and all field directorates under CBIC. The programme was commenced by Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs as she appreciated the paradigm shift in the Indian Customs and its working as its focus moved to Trade Facilitation and Ease of Doing Business. Anurag Singh Thakur, Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, also emphasized the importance of customs in safeguarding the borders, especially during the pandemic.



The WCO Certificate of Merit had also been awarded to 17 custom officers out of which 08 were awarded the certificate at the event whereas rest of them were awarded during the virtual programme by their respective Head of the Departments.



The first time the day was celebrated in 1983 by CCC (Customs Cooperation Council) which was later renamed as WCO (World Customs Organization). Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, WCO is the only international body to look after the matters concerning border control and international customs and covers 98% of the world trade.
