Every year on 29 August, the International Day Against Nuclear Tests is observed. The maiden commemoration was held in 2010 for this Day. Each year various activities are coordinated around the world to observe the day such as conferences, symposia, exhibits, publications, competitions, media broadcasts, lectures and other initiatives related to the subject.



The United Nations General Assembly unitedly adopted the resolution 64/35 on December 02, 2009, in its 64th session and declared August 29 the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. The deliverance calls for accelerating education and awareness regarding the impacts of nuclear explosions or the effects of nuclear weapons test explosions and the requirement for the termination as one of the major goals to achieve a nuclear-weapon-free world.



To observe the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site, the Republic of Kazakhstan along with huge support of sponsors and cosponsors initiated the resolution.



Since its foundation, many comprehensive maneuvres at civil society level and bilateral & multilateral government level developments have been initiated to promote the cause of banning nuclear tests.



Furthermore, the General Assembly has designated the 'International Day For The Total Elimination Of Nuclear Weapons' to Sept. 26 with an aim to support the cause of the nuclear disarmament and total elimination of nuclear weapons.



The 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty is an international instrument that can put an end to nuclear testing but this treaty is yet to come into force.
