Established on December 12, 2018, through resolution A/RES/73/127, the International Day for Multilateralism And Diplomacy For Peace was approved by the United Nations General Assembly. The first time the day was observed on April 24, 2019. The objective of the day is to 'disseminate the advantages of multilateralism and diplomacy for peace, including through public and educational awareness-raising activities'.
The Assembly proclaimed the day while considering that preserving the values of multilateralism and international cooperation is fundamental to promote and support the three pillars of the UN - Peace and Security, Development and Human Rights.
The COVID19 pandemic is a tragic reminder of how deeply connected we are. We must do all we can to save lives and ease the economic and social conditions. It is not enough to proclaim the virtues of multilateralism; we must continue to show its added value. International cooperation must adapt to changing times. This International Day was approved on 12 December 2018 and from now on 24 April stands to remind us of the importance of multilateralism.
More than 70 states took the floor on 24 April, all reconfirming their commitments to multilateralism for a better future.
