Every year on 15 September, the International Day of Democracy is observed to promote and support the fundamentals of democracy. The first time the day was celebrated in 2007 when the United Nations General Assembly resolved to recognize September 15 as the International Day of Democracy.

Some of the indispensable components of democracy are the respect for human rights, the standards of freedom, and the concept of holding authentic and periodic elections by universal franchise. These values are evolved in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and are incorporated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The day is celebrated around the world to accentuate the importance of democracy, what it presumes, its opportunities and challenges and the responsibility that is carried by all parliaments. The day will also provide an opportunity to discuss and examine the democratic functions performed by the parliament through contemplation and the necessary steps that must be taken to enhance the effectiveness.

The theme for 2020 is 'COVID-19: 'A Spotlight on Democracy'. Every nation is administering the measures to fight the corona pandemic but to uphold the rule of law is also the supreme concern along with the respect and protection of international standards.
