Every year on Jan 24, the International Day of Education is observed across the world to celebrate education's role in peace and development. On Jan 24, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the day.
Education is a human right and a public responsibility. Without equitable quality, inclusive education, and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will fail to overcome the harshness of gender equality and will not be able to break the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of students behind.
The International Day of Education 2022 will be celebrated to provide a platform to reveal the crucial transformations that need to be nurtured to recognize everyone's fundamental right to education to move towards a more sustainable, peaceful, and inclusive future.
The 2022 theme for the International Day of Education is 'Changing Course, Transforming Education'.
The UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, on the occasion, said, "In these exceptional times, business as usual is no longer an option. If we are to transform the future, if we are to change course, we must rethink education. This means forging a new social contract for education, as called for by the UNESCO report on the Futures of Education, released last November".
