Every year on Feb 11, International Day of Women And Girl In Science is celebrated across the world to showcase the empowerment of women and to achieve the equal participation of women and girls in the stream of science.
On this day, an International Day of Women And Girl In Science Assembly is organized. The year 2021 will mark the 06th anniversary of the International Day of Women And Girl In Science Assembly which will be organized by the RASIT (Royal Academy of Science International Trust) along with the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), the Permanent Missions of various countries to the UN, the UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development), and WIPO (World Intellectuals Property Organization).
On Dec 22, 2015, the United Nations General Assembly took the decision that an annual observance is needed to recognize the critical role girls and women play in the stream of Science & Technology. Since then, the day is being celebrated across the world to promote the equal and full participation of women and girls in science.
The theme for the International Day of Women And Girl In Science 2021 is 'Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19'. During the hard times of the pandemic, women across the world actively participated in the research, developing techniques and management to create the vaccine.
The Ministry of Education, Government of India, also tweeted on the occasion, "Celebrating International day of women & girls in #science, today! Let's take a moment to applaud and acknowledge the incredible contribution women & girls have made around the world in #FightAgainst COVID".
