Every year on Feb 11, the International Day of Women & Girl In Science is observed across the world to achieve equal and full access to and participation in science for girls and women. The Day also spread awareness to empower girls and women and to achieve gender equality.
A momentous gender gap has continued throughout the years at all levels of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines all across the world. The women are still under-represented, even though they have shown tremendous growth towards increasing their participation in higher education and science.
For the United Nations, Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls has always been a prime issue.
On March 14, 2011, the Commission on the Status of Women acquired a report at its 55th session, with agreed decisions on access and participation of girls and women in education, science and technology, and training and for the promotion of equal access of women to decent work and full employment. On Dec 20, 2013, the General Assembly adopted the resolution on S&T and innovation for development recognizing full and equal access to and participation for women and girls of all ages in science, technology and innovation as imperative to achieve gender equality and women empowerment.
The 2022 theme for the International Day of Women & Girl In Science is "Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Water Unites Us".
The Secretary-General of UN António Guterres, on the occasion, said, "We need more women developing artificial intelligence that serves everyone and works for gender equality. We also need to reverse trends that keep young women scientists from pursuing careers that help us address the climate and environmental crises".
