In 1966, the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declared Sept 08 as International Literacy Day at the 14th session of the General Conference.
The UNESCO also considers the literacy issue as one of the major components of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Under the UN's SDG Agenda, the world leaders promote universal access to quality education and education opportunities.
In the prevailing scenario, the COVID-19 crisis has disturbed the education of children, young people and adults to an unequaled extent. It has also aggravated the former disparity in access to substantial literacy learning opportunities, which has affected around 773 million non-literate adults and young people.
The theme of International Literacy Day 2021 is 'Literacy for a Human-Centred Recovery: Narrowing the Digital Divide'.
Every year on Sept 07, since 1967, UNESCO has rewarded innovation and excellence in literacy through International Literacy Prizes. More than 500 programmes and projects are undertaken by individuals, governments, and non-governmental organizations from across the world have been recognized through the Prize. Through this prestigious Prize, UNESCO aims to encourage and support effective literacy practices. To know about prize laureates, click here.
