Every year on Sept 08, International Literacy Day is observed by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

This day is observed across the world to remind about the significance of literacy as a matter of human rights and dignity, and also to promote the objective of literacy towards a better literate and sustainable society as it also highlights the importance of literacy to societies, communities, and individuals.

In 1965, the World Conference of Ministers of Education in Tehran originated the Day. However,on Oct 26, 1996, UNESCO recognised it on the international level. During that time, the world was challenging issues such as illiteracy, poverty, and unemployment. As per the UNESCO, literacy challenges, despite the progress, continue with over 700 million illiterate people across the globe. Most of them still lack basic writing and reading skills and come face to face with increased vulnerability.

United Nations considers literacy a key component of the United Nations SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The theme for the International Literacy Day 2022 is 'Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces'.

On this Day, the Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay said, "School closures and disruptions caused by the pandemic have likely driven learning losses and drop-outs. Through the celebration of International Literacy Day, UNESCO calls on all actors in the field of education and beyond to re-think the role of literacy".
