Every year on Feb 21, International Mother Language Day is celebrated across the world to promote linguistic, cultural diversity, and multilingualism. The Day also recognizes that languages and multilingualism can promote inclusion and the focus of Sustainable Development Goals to leave no one behind. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) believes education is the foundation of learning and must start from the early years and childhood care.
In Nov 1999, the General Conference of the UNESCO proclaimed the International Mother Language Day and the UN General Assembly welcomed the proclaimation in its resolution of 2002.
The declaration emerged to pay tribute to the Bangladeshis Language Movement as Bangladesh celebrates the Feb 21 as the anniversary of the day when they fought for recognition for the Bangla language.
International Mother Language Day 2021 is a call on parents, educators & teachers, families, and policymakers to augment their commitment to inclusion in education and multilingual education to promote education recovery with reference to COVID-19. This attempt also subscribe to the United Nations International Decade of Indigenous Languages which is being lead by the UNESCO and also places multilingualism at the heart of indogenous people.
To celebrate the day, a virtual event had been organized on Feb 19, 2021. The webinar addressed two themes: Rethinking inclusive practice and policy in learning and teaching in multilingual contexts and augmenting inclusion through multilingualism in ECCE (Early Childhood Education and Care) including sign language.
The awareness is growing regarding the languages that they play a significant role in development, intercultural dialogue and in ensuring cultural divesity and also to strengthen cooperation and to attain quality education for all to build inclusive cultural society and to preserve cultural heritage.
