Every year on May 18, International Museum Day is celebrated across the world to raise awareness about the importance of museums. The Day is observed by the ICOM (International Council of Museums) every year to recognize the importance of museums as a means of cultural exchange, cultural enrichment, and development of cooperation, mutual understanding and peace among peoples.
In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) started observing the Day as the International Museum Day. Established in 1946, ICOM is a non-governmental head organisation of the museums and is dedicated to safeguard and promote natural and cultural heritage- both intangible and tangible & current and future. A total of 31 International Committees work under ICOM to fulfill these objectives.
Every year, professionals and the museum communities from across the world take part in celebration by sharing their ideas, new business models, and discuss innovative solutions to address the socio-economic and environmental risks.
The 2021 theme for the International Museum Day is 'Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine'.
In India: A virtual program was organized by the Ministry of Culture which was addressed by Prahlad Singh, Minister of State for Culture and Tourism. He said that the culture is a true reflection of a country's development and civilisation.. He added ,"We have to present the correct history and facts and museums can contribute to it in a big way".
In this virtual program, two panel discussions were also organized on the themes: a) Many shades of Online Interaction and Engagement and What It Means for Museums and b) Re-imagining Museum & Culture Study Programs to Create New Pathways to the Future.
