Every Year on May 12, the International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world to honour the nurses' contribution to society. The 12 May is the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale who is also known as the 'founder of the Modern nursing'. The 2020 year celebrates the 200th birth anniversary of the Florence Nightingale as she was born on May 12, 1980, and to honour her the WHO has designated the 2020 year as the 'Year of the Nurse and Midwife'.
Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), also known as “The Lady With the Lamp,” was a British nurse, statistician, and social reformer, best known as the architect of modern nursing. Her involvement as a nurse during the Crimean War was foundational in her vision about sanitation. In 1860, she established the Nightingale Training School for Nurses and St. Thomas’ Hospital. Her attempts to ameliorate healthcare greatly influenced the calibre of care in the 19 and 20 centuries.
Nursing: A voice to lead - Nursing the World to Health is the 2020 theme for International Nurses Day.
This year WHO (World Health Organisation) in partnership with the ICN (International Council of Nurses) and the global Nursing Now campaign has developed the State of the World's Nursing Report. In the year 2018, the global shortage of nurses was estimated to be 5.9 million. The report aims at creating around 6 million nursing jobs by 2030 with the main focus on low and middle-income countries.
