Every year on May 21, International Tea Day is observed across the world to raise awareness of the deep cultural and economic significance and the long history of tea around the world.

The day aims at promoting sustainable production, marketing, and consumption of tea. It also provides an opportunity for leaders at the national, regional, and global levels to make sure that the tea industry continues to play a significant role in fighting hunger, reducing extreme poverty, and safeguarding livelihoods and natural resources.

For the first time, the day was observed in 2005 in New Delhi, and in 2015, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) was offered a proposal by the Indian government to expand the celebrations of the day across the world.

The production and processing of tea represent a primary source of livelihood for millions of families in developing nations. Tea represents an important role in poverty reduction, rural development, and food security in developing nations as it is one of the primary cash crops.

Tea consumption can also bring health wellness and benefits due to it's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and weight loss effects.

The 2022 theme for the International Tea Day is Tea and Fair Trade.

English Playwright Arthur Wing Pinero rightly said, "Where there is tea, there is hope".
