Each year on September 30, the International Translation Day is celebrated around the world to accolade the efforts of the language professionals who play the important role of bringing countries together, contributing the development and augmenting world security and peace, and promoting dialogue.
The General Assembly acquired resolution 71/288 on May 24, 2017, for the role of language professionals in promoting peace and connecting the world, understanding, and development and announced the celebration of International Translation Day on 30 September.
On September 30, the feast of St. Jerome is also celebrated who translated the Bible from the Greek manuscripts into Latin and is also considered the patron saint (of translators). He was fluent in Illyrian, Latin, Greek and Hebrew languages.
Every year, the UN organizes the UN St. Jerome Translation Contest to award the best translator in Arabic, English, Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian, and German. The objective of the contest is to promote multilingualism and to underline the supreme role of language professionals and translators in multilateral diplomacy.
