Chess is one of the board games played between two players. The game aims to move types of chess pieces, and each piece has a fixed set of possible moves. All the player has to do is try to capture the opponent's king piece. Nowadays, there are more than 2,000 indescribable variants of the game. During the Gupta Period (319 -543 CE), chess was called Chaturanga which means four divisions, and originated in Northern Indian Subcontinent and spread along the Silk Roads west to Persia.

Modern chess is derived from Chaturanga (four divisions), directing the playing pieces into cavalry, chariotry, elephantry, and infantry. These pieces today are called knight, rook, and bishop. Then, the game was all about these four players. Around 600 CE, when Chaturanga arrived in Sassanid Persia, the game was renamed and given the title Shatranj. Around that time, the Indian Subcontinent visited King Khosrow I (531-579) and presented him with Chaturanga as a gift. After this, the game spread along the Silk Roads to other territories, including Byzantium and the Arabian Peninsula.

Later in 900 CE, Al-Suli and Al- Lajlaj were the Abbasid chess masters. They two worked dedicatedly on the strategy and techniques of the game. By 1000 CE, chess became a popular board game in Russia and Europe and was introduced to the Eurasian Steppe. The Alfonso manuscripts were also known as the Libro de Los Juegos, which means the Book of Games. This book was a collection of texts regarding three different types of widespread games during the 13th century CE and described chess like Persian Shatranj in gameplay and rules.
