Every year on Nov 11, National Education Day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin, also known as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was the first education minister of independent India (from 1947 to 1958) and played a noteworthy role in sculpturing the education system of the country.

Apart from being the first education minister, he was also a journalist, politician, freedom fighter, educationist, and the recipient of India's highest civilian award - Bharat Ratna (in 1992).
Born in 1888 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Azad was homeschooled and knew many languages including Arabic and Persian. He also started 02 weekly journals - Al-Hilal and Al-Balagh to promote Hindu-Muslim unity.
