Every year on Jan 24, National Girl Child Day is celebrated across the country to spread awareness and to create a positive and safe environment for the girl child. The first time the day was celebrated in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

The objective of the day is to raise awareness regarding BBBP (Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao) campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jan 2015 and to spread awareness on declining CSR (Child Sex Ratio).

On the occasion, PM Modi wished and saluted the daughters of the nation and also tweeted, "On National Girl Child Day, we salute our #DeshKiBeti and the accomplishments in various fields. The Central Government has undertaken many initiatives that focus on empowering the girl child, including access to education, better healthcare and improving gender sensitivity".

He also acknowledged the efforts of the people who are functioning towards empowerment of the girl child and to ensure a life of dignity and opportunity. In this regard, he tweeted, "Today is also a day to especially appreciate all those working towards empowering the girl child and ensuring she leads a life of dignity and opportunity. #DeshKiBeti

The NEP (National Education Policy) 2020 has also introduced a 'Gender Inclusion Fund' to target the development of the girl-child as it will focus on ensuring the cent-percent enrollment of girls in schools and for higher education.
