Every year on January 24, National Girl Child Day is celebrated across the country to raise awareness among the society towards the value and respect of the girl child. The Ministry of Women and Child Development undertook the initiative with the objective to provide opportunities and support to the girls of India.

In 2008, the Govt declared Jan 24 to be celebrated as the National Girl Child Day with the objective of raising the awareness of the society towards the girl child.

According to the Ministry, the Day is observed to create awareness about the rights and opportunities of the girl children like everyone else, to support them, and to remove gender-based biases. The Day also promotes awareness about the inequalities faced by them and educates people about their future and education.

The main objective of the Day is to change the attitude of society towards girls, to decrease female feticide, and to create awareness about the diminishing sex ratio, as notified by the Ministry.

The Day is marked by various programmes and events all across the nation. Though this year, due to the COVID, the Ministry will organize all the programmes in virtual mode.

On this occasion, as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually interact with the awardees of the Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, a ceremony to recognize the extraordinary achievements of the children.
