Every year on Aug 7, National Handloom Day is observed across the country to honour the handloom weaving community for their enormous contribution to the country's socio-economic development. The Day also commemorates the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on Aug 07, 1905 in Calcutta.

The day also marks the country's assertion to protect its marvelous handloom heritage and to empower workers and weavers with significant opportunities to ensure their livelihoods.

The National Handloom Day 2021 marks the 7th year of the celebration of India's handloom heritage. The day was first observed in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai declaring 'Aug 7 as National Handloom Day'.

The theme for the National Handloom Day 2021 is 'Handloom, an Indian legacy'.

To raise awareness among the general public, the Ministry of Textile, Govt of India is organising a function in New Delhi's Convention Centre. Similar events were also organised in Varanasi, Jaipur, Guwahati, and Bhubaneswar in the past days.

The Govt is also establishing 03 Handloom Craft Villages at Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala; Kanihama, Budgam, Srinagar; and Mahpara Village, District Golaghat, Assam in collaboration with the respective State governments. The objective is to promote the renowned handicraft and handloom products of the region and to attract domestic and international tourists.

The National Handloom Development Corporation is also organising the 'My Handloom My Pride Expo' from Aug 1 to Aug 15, 2021 at Dilli Haat, INA, New Delhi. Over 125 Handloom agencies/ National awardees belonging from 22 states are participating in the Expo.
