Every year on June 29, National Statistics Day is celebrated to commemorate the exceptional contributions made by Late Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. Also known as the 'Father of Indian Statistics', Mahalanobis, was born on June 29, 1893, in Calcutta, West Bengal.

PC Mahalanobis was among the members of the 1st Planning Commission of India and is best remembered for a statistical measure, the Mahalanobis distance.The formula is used to determine the distance from a point to a distribution, on the basis of the measurements in multiple dimensions. This formula is widely used in the stream of cluster analysis and classification.

He also founded the ISI (Indian Statistical Institute) and contributed to the large-scale design sample surveys.

Statistics have high significance as it helps in the formation of economic policies and plans. It presents facts in a definitive and precise form. Statistics also helps in conducting social surveys and play an integral role in the health field. It is also a crucial part of Mathematics.

The theme for National Statistics Day 2021 is 'End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improve Nutrition and Promote Sustainable Agriculture (or SDG 2 of the UN)'.

Every year on the Day, several events are organized. But, due to the COVID pandemic, this year, the main events will be organized through Video Conferencing/ Webcasting at NITI Aayog, New Delhi.
