Every year on July 18, Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated to commemorate the services of Mr Mandela and honour them through awareness, volunteer work, and community services.

Mr Mandela, or Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, was the former president of South Africa (from 1994 to 1999). He opposed the Apartheid in South Africa and worked relentessly for human rights, justice, and fundamental freedoms. He dedicated his life to to empower all men and women, to establish social equality, and to promote dialogue and solidarity for justice.

To commemorate his contribution to peace and freedom, the United Nations General Assembly, in Nov 2009 declared 18 July as "Nelson Mandela International Day" under the resolution A/RES/64/13. The resolution recognizes his values and his dedication to the humanity service in: race relations; conflict resolution; protection and promotion of human rights; gender equality, reconciliation; the rights of children and other vulnerable groups; the promotion of social justice; and the fight against poverty.

Every 05 years, the UN General Assembly presents an honorary award 'Nelson Mandela Prize' to the outstanding achievements and contributions of 2 laureates (one female and one male).

The theme for Nelson Mandela International Day 2021 is "One Hand Can Feed Another".

On this occasion, several events are organized to mark the Day by making a difference in communities. He believed - 'Everyone has the responsibility and the ability to change the world'.
