After India became a self-dependent country, the Constituent Assembly assigned the position of drafting the Constitution to a committee chaired by Dr. BR Ambedkar. The first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, was the President of the Constituent Assembly established in 1946.

At the start of 1948, Dr. Ambedkar concluded the draft of the Indian Constitution and demonstrated it in the Constituent Assembly. On November 26, 1949, this draft was embraced with very few amendments. The Indian Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, observed as Republic Day.

The Constituent Assembly took nearly three years to complete the vital and most historic mission of drafting a Constitution for Independent India. Indian Constitution is the biggest written Constitution in the world, with 1,17,360 words in the English version.
