Every year on November 26, India celebrates Constitution Day or National Law Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas. Constitution Day marks the day when Constituent Assembly adopted Indian Constitution in 1949.



It was in 2015 when the Government of India chose to establish November 26 as Constitution Day to progress constitutional values among residents. The day was announced in the year, which marked the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar who was the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution.



After India became a self-dependent country, the Constituent Assembly assigned the position of drafting the Constitution to a committee chaired by Dr. BR Ambedkar. The first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, was the President of the Constituent Assembly established in 1946.



At the start of 1948, Dr. Ambedkar concluded the draft of the Indian Constitution and demonstrated it in the Constituent Assembly. On November 26, 1949, this draft was embraced with very few amendments. The Indian Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, observed as Republic Day.



The Constituent Assembly took nearly three years to complete the vital and most historic mission of drafting a Constitution for Independent India. Indian Constitution is the biggest written Constitution in the world, with 1,17,360 words in the English version.



The Preamble of the Constitution of India announces the country as a secular, sovereign, socialist, and democratic republic and desires to secure liberty, justice, and equality for all citizens and facilitate fraternity to maintain the unity and integrity of the country.
