On May 26, Vesak Day was observed across the world. Also known as the Day of the Full Moon, this Day is considered the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists from across the world.

On this Vesak Day in the year 623 B.C (around two and a half millennia ago), the Buddha was born, attained enlightenment, and the Buddha passed away in his 80th year.

The General Assembly of the United Nations, under its resolution 54/115 of 1999, recognized the Day to acknowledge the Buddhism contributions to the spirituality of humanity made for over two and a half millennia and continues. The UN Headquarters along with other UN offices commemorates the Day annually.

At present, UNESCO is implementing a project for the development of a unique Buddhist Heritage Route for South Asia's Sustainable Tourism Development with assistance from the Korea International Cooperation Agency.

António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN, said, "on this Day of Vesak, Let’s resolve to build lives of peace and dignity for all on a healthy planet".
