Every year on May 20, World Bee Day is celebrated across the world to raise awareness regarding the importance of pollinators, the risks they face and their benefits to sustainable development.

Bees, among other pollinators like butterflies, hummingbirds and bats, are increasingly under threat from human activities. However, Pollination is an essential process for our ecosystems' survival. Around 90% of the wild flowering plant species of the world depend, in some or the other, on animal pollination. Over 75% of the food crops of the world and 35% of global agricultural land also depend on pollination. Pollinators make direct contributions to food security as they are an important factor in conserving biodiversity.

Around 25,000 to 30,000 species of bees are efficacious pollinators, and together with flies, moths, wasps, butterflies, and beetles, they make up the majority of the pollinating species. Caring for these pollinators is part of the fight against world hunger.

The 2021 theme for the World Bee Day is 'Bee engaged – Build Back Better for Bees'.

The United Nations, on this Day, organized an event and requesting everyone to follow the conversations on social media sites using #WorldBeeDay and #Savethebees.

In India: The Union Agriculture Minister, on the occasion, inaugurated a project to establish a regional honey quality testing laboratory at IARI (Indian Agriculture Research Institute), New Delhi.
