Every year on June 12, World Day Against Child Labour is observed to focus the attention of the world on the global extent of child labour and the efforts and action required to eliminate it.

Child labour is work carried out to the endangerment and detriment of a child, in violation of the national legislation and international law. It either forces dual burden of schooling and work on the children or deprives them of schooling altogether.

At present, there are more than 218 million children throughout the world, who work, many full-time. They do not have time to play, go to school, and receive proper care & nutrition. So many of them are exposed to the worst conditions and forms of child labour such as slavery, working in hazardous surroundings, forced labour, illicit activities including prostitution and drug trafficking, and involvement in armed conflict as well.

The Sustainable Development Goals adopted in 2015 by the world leaders, include a renewed global commitment to terminate child labour.

Each year, the Day brings together employers, workers, governments, organizations, civil society, and millions of people from across the globe to emphasize the plight of child labourers and the ways and suggestions to help them.

On this Day, the International Labour Organization and UNICEF will release new global trends and estimates on child labour (2016-2020), to assess the pace of progress towards the termination of child labour.

The 2021 theme of World Day Against Child Labour is 'Act Now, End Child Labour'.
