Every year on Oct 16, World Food Day is observed by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations. This Day is observed to spread worldwide awareness and raise collective action to combat the hunger issue and to ensure a healthy diet for everyone.

Established in Nov 1979, the Day was suggested by Dr Pal Romany, the former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food. Gradually, this became a procedure to raise awareness about hunger, sustainability, food production, and malnutrition. The Day also marks the anniversary of the FAO's founding of the United Nations.

The main focus of the Day is to tackle global hunger and attempts to eradicate hunger across the globe.

The FAO reported that the contemporary agri-food systems are revealing profound injustices and inequalities. Around 02 billion people do not have regular access to adequate amounts of nutritious and safe food, whereas 03 billion can't even afford healthy diets, which results in increased obesity worldwide. Another big concern is the generation of greenhouse gases like methane caused by food waste.

FAO added that collective action is required to fix this so that everyone can access nutritious and safe food and to make the entire food supply chain more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive.

The theme of World Food Day 2021 is "Our actions are our future. Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment, and a Better Life".

The World Food Day 2021 commemorations will be jointly led by the FAO, the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, and the World Food Programme. Events will be coordinated across 150 countries with multiple governments and partners, notified the United Nations.
