To memorialize humanitarian workers injured and killed in the course of their work, World Humanitarian Day is celebrated around the world every year on August 19.
On this day in 2003, 22 people got killed in a bomb attack in Baghdad, Iraq including Sergio Vieira de Mello, chief humanitarian in Iraq. In 2009, This day was ascertained as World Humanitarian Day by the United Nations General Assembly.
This year, when the whole world is fighting against the corona pandemic, the day is also being celebrated to honour all health and aid workers who continue to provide protection and life support to needy people.
The theme for the year 2020 is #RealLife Heroes to pay special tribute to heroes who have devoted their lives to help others in most extenuating circumstances around the world.
