Every year on September 24, the World Maritime Day is celebrated around the world to symbolize the contribution of international maritime industries regarding the world's economy especially shipping.



Every year, World Maritime Day is celebrated by the International Maritime Organization around the globe mostly on the last Thursday of the September month.



Shipping is the most structured, systematic and most cost-effective technique of international shipment for most commodities, it also imparts low-cost and reliable medium of transporting goods worldwide, promoting commerce and trade, and assistance to construct affluence among people and nations. Around 80 percent of the global trade is transported through International shipping to people, businesses and communities around the world.



The theme for World Maritime Day 2020 is 'Sustainable Shipping for Sustainable Planet' which presents an opportunity to raise awareness regarding the UN SDGs (United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals).



Sustainable maritime development and sustainable shipment are some of the major priorities of the International Maritime Organization for upcoming years. Therefore, IMO is committed to work on new innovation and technology, energy efficiency, maritime education, maritime training, maritime traffic management, maritime security and maritime infrastructure development field to develop and implement the global standards and to provide the foundation required for the sustainable and green marine transport system.
