World Migratory Bird Day, or WMBD, is an annual event to raise awareness for the protection of the migratory birds, their habitats, their ecological importance, the threats faced by these birds and the exigency for international cooperation (to conserve them). This day is observed every year on Second Saturday in May and in October around the world and several events are organized regarding the subject such as Birdwatching, Bird Festivals, Education Programmes etc.
The WMBD campaign is organized by 2 international wildlife treaties administered by the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme). The two international wildlife treaties are 1) the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals and 2) the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement; together with Environment For The Americas.
The theme for the World Migratory Bird Day 2020 is "Birds Connect Our World". The theme was chosen to highlight the importance of restoring and conserving the ecological integrity and connectivity of ecosystems that support the natural movements of migratory birds.
