The faculty members of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and AI4 Bharat have developed an AI (Artificial Intelligence) model and dataset to mechanise text in 11 languages. AI4 Bharat is a tribune to build artificial intelligence solutions for problems pertinent to India.

According to the statement issued by IIT Madras, the AI4 Bharat and the researchers of IIT-M has released AI models and datasets for the 11 languages which are Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Punjabi, Kannada, Odia, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, and Assamese.

These multilingual datasets and models developed under this initiative will deliver the mandatory constituents to faculty, students, industries and startups to work on the instruments of Indian languages and thrust the bounds of technology. These resources could be accessed by anyone and are open-source and free of cost. The models are available to download from the Github repository: indicnlp.ai4bharat.org

It has taken one year for the team of researchers consisting of faculty, students, volunteers from IIT Madras and AI4 Bharat to collect data and train models to mechanise and process text written in Indian languages.

The lead researcher of the project and a volunteer, Anoop Kunchukuttan, also spoke about the technology and said, "We have an urgent responsibility to take the rapid advances of AI and make them accessible to the common man. One way of achieving this is to improve the interactions between humans and machines. That is where the field of NLP (Natural Language Processing) comes in".

The Natural Language Processing is a branch of artificial intelligence that deals with the interaction between humans and computers using natural language, further added Mr. Kunshukuttan.
