Cranfield University's new facility is set to make the United Kingdom a global leader in Digital Aviation research. The DARTeC (Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre) has been opened by the Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.

The DARTeC Researchers are working with industry partners to advance digital technology applications in the air transport sector. Projects are underway to forge ahead digital airspace and airport infrastructure innovations which will help the United Kingdom in reaching its target of emitting net zero carbon and supporting industry in bouncing back stronger from COVID-19 situation.

The aim of the DARTeC is to address the aviation industry's main research challenges which includes the drones' integration into civilian airspace; increase the airports efficiency through technological advances; to create secure and safe shared airspace through secure data communication infrastructures; and to increase the aircraft's availability and reliability by using self-repair and self-sensing technologies.

This 67 million pounds world-leading facility is located near the Cranfield's airport. It consists of a central building and the digital aviation research laboratories along with a collaborative office space where staff, partners and students can work together. The facility is like a partially covered 'hangar laboratory' which is connected to Cranfield's 737-400 aircraft through an air bridge.
