The John A. Dutton e-Education Institute has initiated the Teaching and Learning Showcase. It is a web-based resource developed to help faculty members create inspiring educational materials and experiences.
The resource attributes research-based practices to teaching that aims at student success. The site diverges into three focus areas: Content development and delivery, student engagement, and assessment. The site explores each area of focus for appropriate research and also points to examples of each focus area used in practice.
Director of learning design for the Dutton Institute, Stevie Rocco, stated that the resource pulls from the Dutton Institute's decades of experience developing learning tools for educators. She added that they wanted to showcase the evidence-based approach they use when thinking about teaching and learning in higher education. Being able to show the research behind teaching practices helps them as they work with faculty members, and the research supports the excellent teaching methods their EMS faculty members already engage in.
She stated that the resource is predominantly for faculty members, but the site is also functional for learning designers, curriculum developers, and others interested in the teaching and learning procedure.
A learning designer for the Dutton Institute, Maria Wherley, said that the resource focus on inspiring educators to try new things with the comfort of knowing the procedures are validated by science. She said that they describe practice and methods and provide examples to show techniques in practice so that users can get a sense of how to execute them and achieve an understanding of any incorporated tools and technologies.
A project manager at the Dutton Institute, Jennifer Babb, said that her team hoped the resource would be a jumping-off point for instructors who want to extend the effectiveness of their teaching using new approaches and tools. Because so many educators are using powerful and innovative teaching techniques within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences- home to Dutton Institute.
In the end, Jennifer Babb stated that in addition to providing examples, we hope it stimulates creativeness and excitement as instructors build their online and residential classroom spaces to improve learning and engagement for their students.
