Researchers from IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), Guwahati have developed an automated AI (Artificial Intelligence) based system to detect colorectal cancer. The system uses colonoscopy images to detect the cancer.

Colonoscopy is the most common technique to detect cancer. The technique helps specialist physicians/ oncologists/ gastroenterologists in inspecting the images provided.

Manas Kamal Bhuyan, IIT Guwahati Professor, said, "We have developed an innovative automated system that can help the physician rapidly and accurately detect colorectal cancer from colonoscopy images".

The researchers also informed that the manual approach of the colonoscopy examination sometimes leads to an erroneous diagnosis.

The scientists from Cotton University in Guwahati, the University of Texas, Harvard University, and the Aichi Medical University of Japan collaborated for the study with the IIT Guwahati professor which was also published in 'Scientific Reports' journal.

The researchers exclaimed that they are excited with their results and also believe that it will have a global impact.

Colorectal Cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in India. The cancer is curable but must be informed at the earliest.
