The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has collaborated with the Indian Institute Of Crafts & Design (IICD Jaipur), a renowned institution for crafts and design, in a remarkable agreement. Their shared vision is to empower rural artisans and revolutionize the marketing of their exquisite creations.

The agreement, sealed by the esteemed individuals A R Harish, the dean of Research and Development at IIT Kanpur, and Toolika Gupta, the director of IICD, signifies a commitment to collaboration and creating new opportunities for rural artisans.

By engaging in student exchange programs, joint projects, and collaborative initiatives, IIT Kanpur and IICD aim to foster a culture of design thinking within the craft and handmade products sector of Uttar Pradesh. Their ultimate goal is to elevate the skills and creative capacity of artisans and craft communities throughout the state, leveraging the expertise and resources of both institutions.

Commencing with a group of talented potters from Bithoor, the partnership will gradually encompass a wide range of products under the esteemed One District One Product (ODOP) scheme.

With a focus on preserving traditional art and craft forms, the IIT Kanpur and IICD collaboration will play a pivotal role in marketing local and rural products. Their joint efforts will center around crafting innovative designs for locally made goods and forging strong connections between artisans, craft communities, and consumers.

Overseeing the realization of these objectives is the esteemed Ranjit Singh RoziShiksha Kendra (RSK), which was established at IIT Kanpur in 2021. Founded by IITK alumnus Ranjit Singh and his wife Martha Carreno, the RSK empowers rural youth through training and entrepreneurial guidance. Their efforts result in producing high-quality items such as apparel, bags, potlis and pouches, clay pottery, and ready-to-eat snacks.

Expressing delight at this transformative initiative, A R Harish, the dean of Research and Development at IIT Kanpur, emphasized the significance of the partnership with the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design, Jaipur. By merging their expertise in research, design, and development with the rich legacy of IICD in the crafts and design sector, the collaboration seeks to empower rural artisans, preserve traditional art forms, and create marketable products. The ultimate aim is to foster significant socio-economic development in Uttar Pradesh.
