A microneedle has been developed by the researchers of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur to administer large drug molecules in a painless way, was the statement issued by the Institute.

The Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering department of the institute has developed the microneedle by reducing the diameter size but the strength has been enhanced so that needle won't break while inserting. This microneedle can be used for insulin delivery and can also be used for corona vaccination in the future.

Prof. Tarun Kanti Bhattacharya, the lead researcher, informed, "A typical use could be achieved in insulin delivery or medication for diseases of the lymphatic system, skin including some forms of cancer, or even COVID-19 vaccine".

He also added, " The more we engage in multidisciplinary R & D, the better we would be able to produce customized microneedle based effective delivery systems".

The testing for this device has been successful on animals and the researchers have filed for a patent in India. The research was also published in Nature Journals and IEEE. As per the official statement, the funding for the research was provided from MEITY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) and the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.
