The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) Advanced Manufacturing Technology Development Center (AMDTC), a Center of Excellence and Fifth Generation Technologies India, has joined hands to produce smart manufacturing solutions for small and medium manufacturers (SMMs).
IIT Madras' AMDTC, a Center of Excellence specializing in machine tools and production technology, is joining forces with Fifth Generation Technologies India (P) Ltd., a branch of the Canadian-headquartered 5G Group of Companies known for its expertise in smart manufacturing solutions for manufacturers of varying scales.
An innovative aspect of this collaboration involves connecting and enhancing older machines within SMMs that may lack controllers. IoT sensors will be employed to gather real-time operational data, effectively transforming these machines into smart data-driven assets.
The primary objective of this partnership is to develop AI and Machine Learning-based techniques that enable real-time optimization of diverse machining processes within SMM facilities. Such optimizations can lead to reduced operational costs and improved overall efficiency. This collaboration aims to achieve advanced research and development in manufacturing technologies tailored for SMMs.
The models developed through this collaboration will serve as the foundation for further developing 'Digital Twins,' which are both suitable and affordable for SMMs. These digital replicas can provide valuable insights and support decision-making in manufacturing processes.
The AMDTC at IIT Madras operates as a Center of Excellence for Machine Tools and Production Technology. Established as a not-for-profit registered society under the Ministry of Heavy Industries scheme called 'Enhancement of Competitiveness of the Indian Capital Goods Sector,' the center collaborates with Indian industries to develop indigenous technologies. It houses these innovations while continuing research and development activities in partnership with other industries and government R&D organizations.
Dr. Ananth Seshan, Chairman of Fifth Generation Technologies, highlighted that the collaboration's primary goal is to provide affordable AI-based digital tools and techniques that enhance the competitiveness of small and medium manufacturers. Moreover, this partnership will leverage student interns to develop and implement solutions at SMM facilities, contributing to the development of a well-trained, next-generation workforce for the manufacturing industry.
